Huh. Will the wonders never cease?
Earlier today, Marvel Comics announced that “Amazing Spider-Man” #583 will feature a 5-page backup story in which Spidey meets the President-Elect. The issue will ship with the variant cover you see above, provided by superstar artist Phil Jimenez.
(from www.newsarama.com) “When we heard that President-Elect Obama is a collector of Spider-Man comics, we knew that these two historic figures had to meet in our comics’ Marvel Universe,” Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said in the release. “Historic moments such as this one can be reflected in our comics because the Marvel Universe is set in the real world. A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man.”
Well, it shouldn’t come as any surprise, really. We all knew Obama was a comic fan, he’s already appeared in Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon, published by Image Comics, and had his own biocomic published by IDW Productions. And since Marvel is all about keeping it’s “Earth” as close to the real world as possible, one might say this was almost inevitable.
Wonder what Stephen Colbert thinks about all this. Probably something along the lines of, “Well, I appeared there first!”
