PTG Episode 32 is brought to you by Independence Day (ID4). Yeah, yeah, yeah, the whole “inserting a computer virus into an alien invasion fleet mothership by using a Mac” thing is a pretty lousy plot device, but try not to think too much about it, or anything else that goes on in this summer popcorn epic, and its pretty enjoyable, even 13 years after its original theatrical release on July 2nd, 1996. In addition to this being the beginning of Will Smith’s dominance of the month of July (Men in Black
-1997, Wild Wild West
-1999, Men in Black II
-2002, Bad Boys II
-2003, I, Robot
-2004), this film is quite memorable for the sound byte that starts off this episode, the president’s speech before the final battle with the aliens, as delivered with verve by actor Bill Pullman. Even people who DON’T like this movie at all have trouble denying that the rallying speech is goose-bump inducing. It’s good stuff, and I thought it only fitting to kick off an episode originally broadcast on July 4th.
Episode 32 features PTG’s review of Public Enemies, the new Michael Mann film featuring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale that dramatizes the early days of the FBI and its hunt for bank robber/folk hero John Dillinger, as well as our Marvel Comics Spotlight focusing on Captain America: Reborn #1, Uncanny X-Men #513, and Invincible Iron Man #15. We also chat with “Hoss” from Cool Stuff Games in Winter Park, and once again we thank Hoss for coming on the show to talk about the events coming up this weekend at his store. Magic 2010 is coming, and Cool Stuff Games will be the place to be for the best in pre-release activities. During the interview Hoss talks to us about the changes in store for Magic players and enthusiasts who choose to dive into “M10″, as well as the various tournament challenges people can take part in at the store starting on July 11th at midnight. For all the details, head over to the Cool Stuff Games store website and scroll down to the Magic 2010 pre-release information. PTG will be there Saturday morning to report on everything going on, so look forward to some new videos showing up on Prime Time Geek YouTube page in the near future!
