PTG Episode 65 is brought to you by Halloween, of course. This is our special Halloween edition of PTG, broadcast live on Saturday, October 31st while everyone else was out trick or treating or otherwise enjoying All Hallow’s Eve festivities. Added a few music beds, a few sound drops from classic horror films to give the episode the proper feel, and we spend the first 18 minutes of the hour talking about the holiday and how people celebrate it once they are beyond the age when knocking on strangers’ doors and asking for either sugary goodness or to be hoodwinked is both cute and welcome. The holiday really is changing for all of us in this world of diminishing community and the rising fear and suspicion of one’s own neighbors. We live in a world now where one can, if they choose, communicate with people on the other side of the world through the use of any number of technological wonders on any given day of the year, much less Halloween, but at the same time families and children are far less likely to venture out of their homes and into their neighborhoods to meet and greet their neighbors on this, one of the more community-oriented holidays of the year. It’s just one more example of how we’ve become more globally-aware and yet more socially-reclusive at the same time. It was gratifying, at least, to see a few children and parents, Geoff and Jen of SomaCow among them, out and about that night keeping the tradition alive. I hope I can do the same, if and when I have the opportunity with children of my own.
So, in addition to talking about Halloween rituals, past and present, in this episode we spotlight the latest Blackest Night titles from DC Entertainment, Blackest Night #4 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis; Green Lantern #47, also by Johns with pencils by Doug Mahnke; and Blackest Night Titans #3 by J.T. Krul and Ed Benes. We wrap the episode with our review of last week’s Smallville episode “Crossfire”, featuring the Smallville introduction of Green Arrow’s soon-to-be sidekick Mia Dearden, a.k.a “Speedy”, and also, as you can see in the photo above, a very long-awaited (at least among most of the Smallville faithful) smooch. Enjoy!
