In this episode we cover the announcement of the 2010 Will Eisner Award nominees, awarded each year for excellence in the comics industry. Certainly a lot of names on the list will be familiar if you listen to PTG on a regular basis, and not all of them because we’ve been praising them all along. There’s one nominee that I personally have a problem with, and seeing his name on the list was ALMOST enough to start a vintage “Felix is Fuming” rant. But since we’ve retired that segment for the sake of my listeners ears and my blood pressure, it’s merely a … heated monologue, rather than a rant. Also in this episode, PTG Flash Reviews returns to FlashForward, getting caught up five episodes into the second half of Season One, and also to Fringe, which gets back to a more conventional (for that show) style episode, complete with gross-out opening minutes and some seriously bizarre Walter Bishop culinary multitasking. We wrap up by spotlighting two Superman titles that shipped last week, Superman: Last Stand of New Krypton #2 (eh) and Superman: Secret Origin #5 (improving!). Enjoy!

In this episode, as you may have guessed from the title, we talk about the end of the ‘Blackest Night‘ event in DC Comics, along with some its implications in terms of the characters restored to life in the course of issue #8. Joe Carbonell, resident artist of the Talk Nerdy Show, takes point in discussing with me the comic in terms of Ivan Reis’ artwork as well as the impact of the story and its themes. it’s been a great ride, but all things come to an end, and in this case the end opens the door to ‘Brightest Day‘, which DC readers will learn more about in the weeks and months to come. For my part, I of course enjoyed the story immensely, and I’ll definitely miss playing that ‘Blackest Night Spotlight’ sounder during our future broadcasts.

Later in the hour, Josh Urbanowski takes the baton from Joe and joins with me in discussing TV during the Flash TV Reviews segment, sharing his thoughts on the return of Fringe and this past season so far. Fringe was most certainly the more compelling of the two sci-fi TV show returns to new episodes this past week; V, in comparison, continued to underwhelm, and I for one have begun a personal countdown of how many more weak episodes of the series will we review before we give up on it entirely.

Finally, the whole cast of Talk Nerdy Show weighs in on an idea I had for a new weekly segment on PTG, one that doesn’t necessarily fit our style and our usual mode of expression, but may provide a bit of a jolt to our listeners and some variety in terms of the way we editorialize. What’s the segment called, you ask? Well, you’ll just have to give the episode a listen, but I’ll give you this hint: the segment from week to week would NOT focus on someone we’re particularly HAPPY with that week. Enjoy!

PTG Episode 94 is brought to you by Flash Gordon. Yes, I’m pimping that movie once again because … well, do I really NEED an excuse to pimp that movie? I don’t think so. Folks out there reading this who enjoy that movie, I’m sure you’ll agree one big reason WHY you enjoy it is because of the Queen soundtrack. It’s epic, ubergeek kind of stuff, the immortal “Flash … AHHH!!” in the main theme, the synthesizer-rich music score, all of it. So when you hear someone talking about rebooting or remaking “Flash Gordon” and taking all the camp out of it, taking away the Queen music, if you’re anything like me, it makes you want to slap your forehead and say, “Hello? Sci-Fi Channel? Two years ago? Didn’t finish a season?!” Lots of campy sci-fi from the 70s and 80s have gotten 21st Century makeovers in the past few years, and certainly some of them NEEDED those makeovers to make them viable again as marketable entertainment. A few weeks ago we reported on French director Pierre Morel’s (Taken, From Paris With Love) desire to remake “Dune”, and we implored him to make something that wouldn’t end up having “cult favorite” status. With Flash Gordon, however, I took the opposite stance, as you’ll hear in the podcast. I WANT my Flash Gordon campy and I WANT it with the Queen music, end of story. Who’s with me on this? Yup, I knew it. EVERYONE.

Also in this episode, we discuss the major comics industry headline of the week, DC Entertainment announcing their superstar executive management team consisting of now co-publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee, and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. The short term effect of this management reshuffling, you ask? A sigh of relief and a surge of excitement among DC’s fanbase is what I’d wager. After all, arguably the most well-known and popular comic book artist these past two decades, along with one of the industry’s most bankable writers being placed in positions of ultimate authority within the evolving hierarchy of DC Entertainment has got to ease the fears of many who wondered what would come of Warner Bros. restructuring of DC to bring it more in line with the filmmaking division. The long term effects, of course, remain to be seen. We wrap the hour by reviewing last week’s big Blackest Night titles–including Green Lantern #51, Green Lantern Corps #45, and Blackest Night: The Flash #3–and last week’s episode of Smallville, entitled “Persuasion.” Yeah, it’s this year’s Valentine’s Day episode, and it was AWFUL, so of course it’s a fun review.
