Thanks again to Todd and Stu for supporting our recent Facebook Fan Page drive–monetary incentive works EVERY time! If you’re in the Clermont area this weekend and you’re a Star Wars fan, then you’re GOING to want to stop by Heroes Landing on Saturday and be a part of the Star Wars Grand Florida Alliance meeting going on there from 5-9PM. As we’ve mentioned on the show a number of times these past few weeks, renowned sculptor and production designer Brian Muir, who has worked on some of the most well-known film franchises in Hollywood history, will be on hand to talk about his autobiography, In the Shadow of Vader, and to meet fans and answer questions. Should be a great night, so be sure and stop by!

In this episode we cover the announcement of the 2010 Will Eisner Award nominees, awarded each year for excellence in the comics industry. Certainly a lot of names on the list will be familiar if you listen to PTG on a regular basis, and not all of them because we’ve been praising them all along. There’s one nominee that I personally have a problem with, and seeing his name on the list was ALMOST enough to start a vintage “Felix is Fuming” rant. But since we’ve retired that segment for the sake of my listeners ears and my blood pressure, it’s merely a … heated monologue, rather than a rant. Also in this episode, PTG Flash Reviews returns to FlashForward, getting caught up five episodes into the second half of Season One, and also to Fringe, which gets back to a more conventional (for that show) style episode, complete with gross-out opening minutes and some seriously bizarre Walter Bishop culinary multitasking. We wrap up by spotlighting two Superman titles that shipped last week, Superman: Last Stand of New Krypton #2 (eh) and Superman: Secret Origin #5 (improving!). Enjoy!

PTG Episode 105 is brought to you by Talk Nerdy Show. Episode 6 of Talk Nerdy Show will air this Friday night starting at 8PM. Don’t miss Ryan, Josh, Joe, and Mark as they give THEIR take on ‘Clash of the Titans‘ as well as take on other geek topics and the thoughts of their live audience. You can find their live show over at www.tinychat.com/talknerdyshow.

In this episode, as you may have guessed from the title, we talk about the end of the ‘Blackest Night‘ event in DC Comics, along with some its implications in terms of the characters restored to life in the course of issue #8. Joe Carbonell, resident artist of the Talk Nerdy Show, takes point in discussing with me the comic in terms of Ivan Reis’ artwork as well as the impact of the story and its themes. it’s been a great ride, but all things come to an end, and in this case the end opens the door to ‘Brightest Day‘, which DC readers will learn more about in the weeks and months to come. For my part, I of course enjoyed the story immensely, and I’ll definitely miss playing that ‘Blackest Night Spotlight’ sounder during our future broadcasts.

Later in the hour, Josh Urbanowski takes the baton from Joe and joins with me in discussing TV during the Flash TV Reviews segment, sharing his thoughts on the return of Fringe and this past season so far. Fringe was most certainly the more compelling of the two sci-fi TV show returns to new episodes this past week; V, in comparison, continued to underwhelm, and I for one have begun a personal countdown of how many more weak episodes of the series will we review before we give up on it entirely.

Finally, the whole cast of Talk Nerdy Show weighs in on an idea I had for a new weekly segment on PTG, one that doesn’t necessarily fit our style and our usual mode of expression, but may provide a bit of a jolt to our listeners and some variety in terms of the way we editorialize. What’s the segment called, you ask? Well, you’ll just have to give the episode a listen, but I’ll give you this hint: the segment from week to week would NOT focus on someone we’re particularly HAPPY with that week. Enjoy!

<itunes:summary>NOTE: The original broadcast of this episode ran just under 1 hour and 35 minutes. This podcast version has been edited down by 30 minutes in order to closer match our usual running time. If you wish to listen to the full, unedited version, as well as watch the recorded video of the episode, click HERE.PTG Episode 105 is brought to you by Talk Nerdy Show. Episode 6 of Talk Nerdy Show will air this Friday night starting at 8PM. Don't miss Ryan, Josh, Joe, and Mark as they give THEIR take on 'Clash of the Titans' as well as take on other geek topics and the thoughts of their live audience. You can find their live show over at www.tinychat.com/talknerdyshow.In this episode, as you may have guessed from the title, we talk about the end of the 'Blackest Night' event in DC Comics, along with some its implications in terms of the characters restored to life in the course of issue #8. Joe Carbonell, resident artist of the Talk Nerdy Show, takes point in discussing with me the comic in terms of Ivan Reis' artwork as well as the impact of the story and its themes. it's been a great ride, but all things come to an end, and in this case the end opens the door to 'Brightest Day', which DC readers will learn more about in the weeks and months to come. For my part, I of course enjoyed the story immensely, and I'll definitely miss playing that 'Blackest Night Spotlight' sounder during our future broadcasts. Finally, the whole cast of Talk Nerdy Show weighs in on an idea I had for a new weekly segment on PTG, one that doesn't necessarily fit our style and our usual mode of expression, but may provide a bit of a jolt to our listeners and some variety in terms of the way we editorialize. What's the segment called, you ask? Well, you'll just have to give the episode a listen, but I'll give you this hint: the segment from week to week would NOT focus on someone we're particularly HAPPY with that week. Enjoy!</itunes:summary>

Folks out there reading this who enjoy that movie, I’m sure you’ll agree one big reason WHY you enjoy it is because of the Queen soundtrack. It’s epic, ubergeek kind of stuff, the immortal “Flash … AHHH!!” in the main theme, the synthesizer-rich music score, all of it. So when you hear someone talking about rebooting or remaking “Flash Gordon” and taking all the camp out of it, taking away the Queen music, if you’re anything like me, it makes you want to slap your forehead and say, “Hello? Sci-Fi Channel? Two years ago? Didn’t finish a season?!” Lots of campy sci-fi from the 70s and 80s have gotten 21st Century makeovers in the past few years, and certainly some of them NEEDED those makeovers to make them viable again as marketable entertainment. A few weeks ago we reported on French director Pierre Morel’s (Taken, From Paris With Love) desire to remake “Dune”, and we implored him to make something that wouldn’t end up having “cult favorite” status. With Flash Gordon, however, I took the opposite stance, as you’ll hear in the podcast. I WANT my Flash Gordon campy and I WANT it with the Queen music, end of story. Who’s with me on this? Yup, I knew it. EVERYONE.

Also in this episode, we discuss the major comics industry headline of the week, DC Entertainment announcing their superstar executive management team consisting of now co-publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee, and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns. The short term effect of this management reshuffling, you ask? A sigh of relief and a surge of excitement among DC’s fanbase is what I’d wager. After all, arguably the most well-known and popular comic book artist these past two decades, along with one of the industry’s most bankable writers being placed in positions of ultimate authority within the evolving hierarchy of DC Entertainment has got to ease the fears of many who wondered what would come of Warner Bros. restructuring of DC to bring it more in line with the filmmaking division. The long term effects, of course, remain to be seen. We wrap the hour by reviewing last week’s big Blackest Night titles–including Green Lantern #51, Green Lantern Corps #45, and Blackest Night: The Flash #3–and last week’s episode of Smallville, entitled “Persuasion.” Yeah, it’s this year’s Valentine’s Day episode, and it was AWFUL, so of course it’s a fun review. Enjoy!

Yes, I'm pimping that movie once again because ... well, do I really NEED an excuse to pimp that movie? I don't think so. Folks out there reading this who enjoy that movie, I'm sure you'll agree one big reason WHY you enjoy it is because of the Queen soundtrack. It's epic, ubergeek kind of stuff, the immortal "Flash ... So when you hear someone talking about rebooting or remaking "Flash Gordon" and taking all the camp out of it, taking away the Queen music, if you're anything like me, it makes you want to slap your forehead and say, "Hello? If you listened to Episode 87 and you enjoyed our interview with Carin and Ryan from the new Talk Nerdy Show, whose debut webcast will be available this Sunday, February 7th over at talknerdyshow.com, then you’re in for a treat. I’m pleased to announce that we’ll have Carin and Ryan in studio for the February 20th broadcast of PTG, so they can talk about reaction to the webcast going up this weekend and promote webcast number two, which they will make available on the web the next day. I’ll provide you with more reminders as the date gets closer, but for now it’s safe to say I’m excited to have the opportunity to hang out with them again, and this time we’ll have microphones and headphones for both of them!

Also coming up in the month of February, “The Man” from Slacker and the Man will be making his return to the show on February 13th, just in time to help me review “The Wolfman“, which debuts in theaters on the 12th. That night we also hope to get Moshi from the Wolf Pack Elite on the phone to talk about this year’s WPE MegaCon after-party as well as other Wolf Pack Elite goings-on, so stay tuned for more details on that!

For now, please enjoy Episode 88–in it I cover Dollhouse’s bittersweet swansong, Smallville’s first new episode of 2010, entitled “Disciple”, and this past week’s Blackest Night tie-ins, including The Atom and Hawkman #46 and the terrifying return of Parallax in Green Lantern #50. Many thanks again to Stu and Todd for inviting us to be a part of their first-ever Geek Singles Night. It was a great night all around, and here (finally) is the podcast of the first hour of show we broadcast from there. Due to equipment limitations that night, we didn’t have access to our effects or sounders during the live show, so anyone who caught the live broadcast and listens to this podcast should immediately notice a difference. It’s a fun hour featuring interviews, our review of Legion, and a rundown of that week’s Blackest Night tie-in issues, including Green Lantern Corps #44 and Blackest Night: The Flash #2. Hope you enjoy, and watch for the second hour to uploaded tomorrow evening!

In the coming weeks you may see me scaling back what goes into these posts. Episodes will still be edited and have all the bells and whistles, but episode images may be simpler or may be removed all together, and blog posts significantly shorter. Not what I want at all, but at this point perhaps necessary to keep things rolling on a timely basis.

In this episode, The Man from “Slacker and the Man” regales us with tales of late night Downtown Orlando adventures among the homeless, as well as helping me break down “The Book of Eli” and that week’s Blackest Night tie-ins from DC, Catwoman #83 and The Power of Shazam #48, both of which are “dead” titles that have been “revived” for one issue as part of the Blackest Night event. Good stuff in each, so check them out! Enjoy the episode, and the second hour WILL be posted in the coming days!

Well, you can find them on MySpace by clicking HERE and also you can preview their tracks on iLike by clicking HERE. Do beware though, me hearties: Explicit lyrics ahoy!

(Also, apologies to Emergency Pizza Party for not mentioning them during the broadcast–I missed their portion of the show, plus quite a bit of the night is a blur at this point …)

Gonna keep this blog entry short–also in this episode we review Daybreakers, the new vampirism-takes-over-the-world movie in theaters starring Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill, and spotlight two great DC Comics books from last week: Blackest Night: Wonder Woman #2 by Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott and Superman: World of New Krypton #11 by Rucka, James Robinson, and Pete Woods. Hope you enjoy, and don’t forget, on this week’s show we’re happy to welcome “the man” pictured with me below, The Man from Slacker and the Man as special guest co-host for both hours! Should be a GREAT show, so be there Saturday night to catch it live!
