After all, we have them to thank for providing the images of Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America concept art that’s sparked so much conversation on the web this past week, and that we spend a considerable part of this hour talking about. Also in this episode, we present our thoughts on Splice, the new sci-fi horror film from Vincenzo Natali (Cube), starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. [NOTE: Throughout the broadcast I mistakenly refer to Natali as "Vincento"--sincere apologies for the error.] We daresay this is the BEST movie you’re not likely to see this summer, especially if you’re not a horror movie fan. The marketing for the film emphasizes the film’s horror movie elements because it has to–that’s really the only way to sell it in the summer movie marketplace. But trust us when we say that this is so much more than just a horror film or just a sci-fi film. Trust us when we say that you really need to see it for yourself.

PTG Episode 115 is brought to you once again by Heroes Landing. Well it turns out that Stu and Todd had a FANTASTIC day over Free Comic Book Day: over 500 transactions during the day, over a dozen new subscribers, and many new friends and fans made throughout the day certainly makes for a phenomenal first time out, and we want to congratulate them on their success. Their Iron Man 2 event last Friday was equally successful–Stu took fifteen lucky fans over to the movie that night and gave away about 300 free comics at the theater, some of whom were at the store the next day and became new subscribers. And NOW, this Friday night, they’re opening their doors once again for Geek’s Night Out! Starting at 7PM, Heroes Landing will be providing space for like-minded geeks to meet and co-mingle, and also, starting at 8PM, they will be presenting Clermont’s own Moonlight Luna-tics Improv players! Plus, just like last time, there will be table space for board games and card games, food and drinks, and lots of great geek spirit. We’ll be there, Slacker and the Man will be there, and Ryan, Josh, and Joe from the Talk Nerdy Show will be there, so if you’re in the area, please do come by and hang out! Hope to see you there!

In this hour (and a half) of PTG, as the title suggests, we cover everything from the possibility (still not confirmed) of Joss Whedon directing the Avengers film, SyFy adding MORE WWE wrestling to their prime time lineup, Jack Bauer really losing it as 24 rushes toward its conclusion, whether or not Stargate Universe is worth watching, more on geek dating, and last week’s big event comics from DC Comics, Brightest Day #1 and War of the Supermen #1. As we’ve mentioned on the show a number of times these past few weeks, renowned sculptor and production designer Brian Muir, who has worked on some of the most well-known film franchises in Hollywood history, will be on hand to talk about his autobiography, In the Shadow of Vader, and to meet fans and answer questions. In this episode we cover the announcement of the 2010 Will Eisner Award nominees, awarded each year for excellence in the comics industry. Certainly a lot of names on the list will be familiar if you listen to PTG on a regular basis, and not all of them because we’ve been praising them all along. There’s one nominee that I personally have a problem with, and seeing his name on the list was ALMOST enough to start a vintage “Felix is Fuming” rant. But since we’ve retired that segment for the sake of my listeners ears and my blood pressure, it’s merely a … heated monologue, rather than a rant. Also in this episode, PTG Flash Reviews returns to FlashForward, getting caught up five episodes into the second half of Season One, and also to Fringe, which gets back to a more conventional (for that show) style episode, complete with gross-out opening minutes and some seriously bizarre Walter Bishop culinary multitasking. We wrap up by spotlighting two Superman titles that shipped last week, Superman: Last Stand of New Krypton #2 (eh) and Superman: Secret Origin #5 (improving!). Enjoy!

In this episode, as you may have guessed from the title, we talk about the end of the ‘Blackest Night‘ event in DC Comics, along with some its implications in terms of the characters restored to life in the course of issue #8. Joe Carbonell, resident artist of the Talk Nerdy Show, takes point in discussing with me the comic in terms of Ivan Reis’ artwork as well as the impact of the story and its themes. it’s been a great ride, but all things come to an end, and in this case the end opens the door to ‘Brightest Day‘, which DC readers will learn more about in the weeks and months to come. For my part, I of course enjoyed the story immensely, and I’ll definitely miss playing that ‘Blackest Night Spotlight’ sounder during our future broadcasts.

Later in the hour, Josh Urbanowski takes the baton from Joe and joins with me in discussing TV during the Flash TV Reviews segment, sharing his thoughts on the return of Fringe and this past season so far. Fringe was most certainly the more compelling of the two sci-fi TV show returns to new episodes this past week; V, in comparison, continued to underwhelm, and I for one have begun a personal countdown of how many more weak episodes of the series will we review before we give up on it entirely.

Finally, the whole cast of Talk Nerdy Show weighs in on an idea I had for a new weekly segment on PTG, one that doesn’t necessarily fit our style and our usual mode of expression, but may provide a bit of a jolt to our listeners and some variety in terms of the way we editorialize. What’s the segment called, you ask? Well, you’ll just have to give the episode a listen, but I’ll give you this hint: the segment from week to week would NOT focus on someone we’re particularly HAPPY with that week. Enjoy!

PTG Episode 90 is brought to you by The CW. (not really) The execs over there have got to be pleased with themselves and their gamble on “Smallville: Absolute Justice”, the two-hour telemovie that aired last Friday night. According to TV Guide, “Absolute Justice” not only brought in Smallville’s best viewership numbers of the season (2.8 million viewers), but also gave The CW its best Friday night showing since September 2008. Not bad, but at the risk of being a party pooper, let’s keep things in perspective here–the winner for the night’s ratings, NUMB3RS, drew 9.18 million viewers, and CBS programming in general ruled the evening, with Ghost Whisperer and Medium drawing 8.77 million and 9.10 million viewers, respectively. Also, according to TVbytheNumbers, reruns of “Law and Order” and “House” beat out “Smallville: Absolute Justice” in the 8PM timeslot, drawing 3.85 and 5.64 million viewers, respectively. The Superman Homepage, while reporting these same numbers, put it best: “While the numbers are encouraging from a CW perspective, it’s hard to get too excited when repeats of “House” and “Law and Order” received higher ratings in the same time slot.” E-yeah, I’d have to agree.

PTG Episode 81 is brought to you by 2010. According to the Wikipedia entry for 2010, we’ve got a lot to look forward to this year. Of particular interest to me is the Total Lunar Eclipse we’re supposed to have on my birthday, December 21st. It will actually be visible in North America right after midnight of the 21st, so I’d say that’s good reason for me to stay up late, wouldn’t you? Might even throw a party and make sure it runs nice and late so we can all see it. I think I’ve got lots of time to plan.

Just one hour of PTG recorded this past week, so this will be this week’s only podcast, but we’ll be back to our regular 2 hour time span this upcoming Saturday. It’s been slow as far as geek news these past few weeks, but that’s certainly going to change by the end of the month. Dollhouse rolls on this week, Smallville returns on January 22nd, 24 begins Season 8 on January 17th, as does Fox’s new series Human Target, based on the DC Comics series of the same name. In terms of movies, we have Daybreakers, the vampire thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill, debuting this week, The Book of Eli, the very promising-looking post-apocalyptic drama starring Denzel Washington, coming January 15th, and Legion, the “angels are coming to destroy us” movie starring Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid, coming January 22nd. Lots out there in the many realms of geek to cover and review, so do stick with us!

In this episode we run down PTG’s New Year’s Resolutions for 2010, which is basically a list of all the things we hope to bring to you this coming year in terms of changes and improvements to the show, so you’ll want to give that a listen and maybe give us some feedback on what we’re hoping to do.
